The Osprey is the provincial bird of Nova Scotia as declared by an Act of the
Provincial Assembly in 1994. This magnificant bird once in peril is a
common sight along Nova Scotia's waterways where it hunts for fish. It
winters in the Caribbean and South America with the first returning birds
often seen in late March. The use of organochlorine pesticides such as
DDT in the 50's and 60's caused a severe decline in the numbers of this
bird. The weakened egg casings collapsed under the weight of the
incubating parent., usually the much heavier female. Thanks to the long life
span of this bird, 15 to a record 35 years, it was able to live through this
period and is now recovering well along with it's once equally threatened
cousin, the Peregrine Falcon.
