Welcome!
The Nova Scotia Migration Count will be held May 10 this year. Every year
birders all over North America participate in this effort to provide a annual
snapshot of our migratory birds as they wing their way north. This database
helps all who are all interested in the wellbeing, population trends and
seasonal migration patterns of our birds. Our recent mild winter has shown
us how quickly nature adapts to climate change as many birds we're not used
to having over our winter have made it through successfully, some possibly
for the first time
This is my third year as provincial coordinator. Since this is a totally
unfunded project staffed by dedicated volunteers throughout Nova Scotia, I
strive to keep costs to a minimum so communication, records keeping and
project management is all done online.
Participation is easy, just contact your provincial coordinator and get a
territory to walk or drive, a feeder to watch or an owl route to listen on and
your in business. This website provides information on how to participate,
copies of forms and the records from all the counts previously held. Last
year over 630 observers tallied 208 species and over 94,000 individual birds
in our province, a commendable effort as good as any in North America for
our population size.
Join me in continuing this important project but most of all have fun!
